The 300,000 indigenous Otomi people live in central Mexico in and around the states where I used to live. How could I not be influenced by their strong use of patterns, colors, and shapes that they incorporate into the beautiful silk threaded embroidery textiles that they produce. Very similar to my work, it takes weeks or months depending on the textile to complete. The patterns, animals shapes, and symbols are believed to be inspired by cliff paintings in the Tepehua-Otomi mountains. These patterns and symbols seemed to fit naturally into my quilling as the colors, shapes, and techniques of my paper are similar to embroidery work.
